- : (Eyal, this is more aimed at the amiga community at large - but it was your
- : message which got me thinking :-) ).
-
- : >Anyway, I'm glad it's here, because then people like me, who now have a PC,
- : >but still like the Amiga, hang in Amiga groups and not in UNIX groups.
-
- : I see this again and agian. It seems there is something good about amigados
- : that keeps even 'deserters' interested...
-
- : It's sad, but unless AT does something real good (and suitably affordable),
- : I'll be forced to go to the PC also. I would like to see amigados
- : re-written so it could run on any PPC platform (or better, a version for
- : all the decent CPU's - maybe even the pentium Pro ?).
-
- : I fear that AT will make amigados dependant on custom hardware (as opposed
- : to just being able to use it), and the amiga will be significantly
- : over-priced all over again.
-
- Could I suggest the UAE as a temporary solution??
-
- : I look at these super-cheap Pentium pc's, and feel sad that we cannot get
- : that sort of cpu power for that sort of price. I do not like msdos, nor do
- : I like unix much more. I would like to be able to run amigados on one of
- : these fast cpu's - or even better, on a fast PPC chip. I still belive that
- : amigados has advantages over other operating systems, and if given a chance
- : and handled properly, more people would know that. Amigados will run in a
- : couple of megs ram, and only needs a small HD to be truly useful. It's
- : fast, tight, and effecient. It seems quite modular (and could easily be
- : more so), and has a usable selection of software. And more.
-
- : I also fear that while the Power PC chip is good, it is not good enough. I
- : see tests where it is consistantly at the 'low end' of the new cpu's. Chips
- : made by MIPS, HP, and yes, even Intel, come in as faster. Is the PPC chip
- : significantly better price/performance ? Or are we being lumped with a
- : second generation dead end ?
-
- Unlike the Intel Chips, the PPC is a true RISC CPU, not a combination of
- both RISC and CISC design.. If the PPC can get its foot into the home PC
- market, then there will be no stopping it. Maybe the Power Amiga will give
- the chip that boost..
-
- : Perhaps amigaos could be made hardware independant ? Like, but better than,
- : windoze NT ? So you could choose any hardware you like (not just ppc/68k) -
- : as long as there were hardware 'modules' for it.. I think it could work,
- : and be quite fast even. The key parts of the os (those used most often -
- : inc. the 'virtual cpu') would be moved off into a 'hardware module',
- : while the bulk of the OS would run as some sort of virtual CPU code. Just
- : plain 68k emulation might do for the v-cpu, for a year or so...
-
- Again, UAE. Sure it runs on UNIX, but it shouldnt be that hard to make a
- port of it to run on other fast systems. I believe it can run on PC`s with
- DOS, albiet a little slow.
-
- : How well AT does the PPC amiga, how fast it is, and how cheap it is, will
- : dictate my future with AmigaOS. Ideally, I'd have a SGI; or (dreaming now!)
- : a supercomputer :-). But I can't for the same reason I might not get a
- : future amiga: Price. As nice as amigaOS is, it's been knocked around and
- : mauled by Commodore, ignored by much of the computer industry, and left for
- : dead for more than a year. I don't know - perhaps all of that has been the
- : death of it (sad), and we are more like a few surviving citizens of Rome
- : trying to teach the barbarians the fine arts and sciences... Old Pope Gates
- : will likly bring about a computer 'Dark Ages'...
-
- : What do you all think ?
-
- I read somewhere the other day about the Be, "being technically the most
- advanced home computer doesnt mean anything, if it doesnt sell, as in the
- case of the Amiga"
-
- Too true. What AT needs to do is advertise. After all, with the right
- advertisements, people will buy anything.
-
- Like Australians believing John Howard :-), or Multimedia PC's (oxymoron
- of the century)
-
- : I hope amigaOS survives, but I am starting to think it won't, and I will be
- : forced to use a less ideal computer os.. I am not sure AT has the smarts to
- : outwit pope gates and his billions, or profiteer barons and their asian
- : clone companies..
-
- AT could always use those "Asian Clone" companies to make cheap Amiga's.
- And if PPC takes off then the Amiga will end up being very cheap. Esp. if AT
- just develop the OS, and leave the hardware to the industry, and CHRP etc.
-
- : Well, A few more months should tell us all if AT is not another commodore.
-
- : >Besides, this emulator also has DOS and Mac versions, apparently (anyone
- : >checked the Mac one yet? Should have less problem with CPU emulation).
-
- : Is there going to be an amiga version of the amiga emulator ? :-)
-
- : The emulator is a start, but I would like to see a proper version of
- : amigados for all platforms. If Pope Bill can do it with a bloated windoze
- : NT, I think AT can do it with amigados - even if it costs a bit of backward
- : compatibility. Do we want amigados for a couple more years, or the next 20
- : ?
-
- No home OS will last the next 20 years.. Maybe not even UNIX..
